Walls of Atienza
Two concentric circuits that tell, in stone, Atienza's role as a frontier.
Atienza's military architecture reflects its strategic role. The village had two walled circuits: the first, closer to the castle, crosses the present-day historic centre; it was built in the 12th century, partly destroyed in the 14th and later rebuilt.
The second circuit, built shortly afterwards, surrounds the current urban limits. The arches of San Juan or Arrebatacapas, of the Virgen and of the Salida survive, as well as the Portillo de San Julián. Of the lost arches, the locations of Antequera and Guerra are known. Seven towers remain on the Camino del Val and two on the old Jewish-quarter wall.
