Church of Santa María del Rey

The first church of Christian Atienza, raised over a former mosque.

The story

It was the first church built after the reconquest of Atienza, in the 12th century, over a former mosque. Romanesque in style, it received modifications in the 13th, 16th and 17th centuries, and was restored in the early 21st century.

Its quadrangular apse and two portals stand out: the south portal, with seven semicircular archivolts and sculpted figures, and the north portal, with inscriptions in Latin and Arabic. It also preserves a Romanesque baptismal font.
