The Holy Thorns
Veneration of the relics of the Crown of Thorns, kept in the village since the 17th century.
The Holy Thorns are two relics from Christ's Crown of Thorns donated to Atienza in the 17th century. They are kept in a reliquary in the parish church of San Juan, on the Plaza del Trigo, and are displayed publicly only one day a year: the first Sunday of May.
The celebration includes solemn mass, display of the reliquary and procession through the streets of the old town. It is one of the most rooted religious festivities in the village, together with Holy Week and La Caballada.
To attend, confirm the exact time with the Tourism Office (+34 949 399 293) the previous week, as the mass time may vary with the liturgical calendar.
The detailed programme of each edition is confirmed each season with the Town Hall of Atienza and the Tourism Office.
